Sound local infrastructure essential to tourism’s future
Today tourism in New Zealand received another boost to remain a premier export industry through an announcement by
Government that emphasises the importance of public infrastructure, says John Moriarty, Chief Executive of the Tourism
Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ).
The Government has announced five hundred thousand dollars is to be provided to the Ministry of Tourism to lead a three
year cross-department project to develop strategies to maximise the benefits of tourism while ensuring it remains
environmentally and economically sustainable.
Mr Moriarty says the Association has championed for fundamental recognition of local infrastructure as essential for the
growth of communities and tourism.
“While the private sector invests in quality products, the public sector through central and local government needs to
play its part as well with the public estate to provide clean water, flood protection and access. Without these, the
fabric of our communities and tourism is diminished”, he says
“The Prime Minister’s comments at the opening of Parliament on the priority of infrastructure, plus this research
initiative, is evidence of action that TIANZ is delighted to endorse”, says Mr Moriarty.
