New Zealand’s most popular food companies are GE free
All five food companies and brands that appear in the top 10 of New Zealand’s most admired companies have non- GE ingredient policies.
A survey to find New Zealand’s most admired companies11 Survey carried out by market researcher NFO and public relations firm Porter Novelli, reported in New Zealand Herald (9 December 2002). placed Hubbard Foods, Cadbury Confectionary, Sanitarium, Heinz Watties and Anchor in the top ten. These companies are listed in the green section of the Greenpeace GE Free Food Guide.
“There is good reason for the success of these companies, they have listened and responded to their customers which is why they have all implemented non-GE ingredient policies,” said Steve Abel, Greenpeace GE campaigner.
“If we approached ‘brand-New-Zealand’ with the same attitude as these companies, and listened to the GE-free preferences of our key export markets in Europe, Asia and Australia, we would not give up our GE-free producer status, ” said Abel.
The first food company featured in the survey that may use GE derived ingredients: Nestle, sits at number 13, a full 10 places behind their non-GE confectionary competitor Cadbury.
