Big pay winners and losers from wages survey
Supply and demand seems to be working reasonably well at determining basic wages and salaries according to the National Wages and Salary Survey conducted by the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
“The areas where pay is rising faster than the average of 3.82% are those where skills are in short supply,” said Graeme Perfect, manager of the survey for EMA.
“The survey has been running for eight years collecting comprehensive wage and salary and other remuneration data on 200 different types of job positions drawn from 700 enterprises. Altogether, the organisations participating in the survey employ more than 103,000 people.
“Changes to the basic rates of pay for 20 positions over five years are detailed at the end of this statement. Some information on fringe benefits, bonuses and other forms of remuneration will be made available once further analysis is completed.” (see other statement with this one regarding changes to pay rates for trades people).
“The survey’s wage and salary figures are averages and should be considered in terms of trends over two or three years.
“For example, two years ago the basic remuneration for Information Systems Managers and Analyst Programmers went up 16.1% and 14.9% respectively; last year with the dot com bubble bursting their incomes flattened off to rises of 3.12% and minus 1.5%. This year their pay recorded 3.6% and minus 1.0%.
“The big winners this year have been electronics technicians (up 14% to $45,239), Managing Directors with 50 to 199 staff (up 11.3% to $142,206), General Managers with under 50 staff (up 8.7% to $91,100), semi skilled production workers (up 6.8% to $29,888 – last year they also went up 10.7%) and Accounts Clerks (up 6.7% to $37,691- also up 20.2% last year.)
“Big losers this year have been Marketing/Business Development Managers (down 3.4% to $86,110 though they were up 14% last year), Analyst Programmers (down 1% to $51,621-last year they were also down), General Road Transport Drivers (down 0.7% to $32,393, though they were up 14.25% last year) and Unskilled Warehouse Stores people (down 0.5% to $24,205 though they were up 11.65% last year.)

Waiting for the electrician?
If you thought it was getting more expensive to call an electrician in the weekend, you’re probably right.
The pay rates of electricians and other trades people have risen significantly over the past year according to the National Salary and Wage Survey data.
“There have been dramatic changes in the pay packets of tradespersons as well as for the other 200 types of job position covered,” said Graeme Perfect, Manager of the National Wage and Salary Survey for the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
“We compared 10 trades positions with their pay last year,” Mr Perfect said. (see below). “The changes taking place can offer interesting insights on other changes occurring in the economy.
“Whereas electricians’ basic pay went up on average nationally by 6.2% for the year ended July, to $43,787, the pay packets of petrol engine motor mechanics went down 6.2% to $31,734.
“For whatever reasons, including the possibility that the vehicle fleet is more reliable, we appear to have enough petrol engine motor mechanics.
“The same is not true for diesel mechanics – their pay went up 9.4% last year to reach $40,707. Maintenance fitters did well too with a 6.4% increase while pay rises for unskilled trades people have hardly changed or even moved down.”
