THE WAREHOUSE - REDUCING WASTE THROUGH SUPPLIER ENGAGEMENT

As part of its commitment to Zero Waste, The Warehouse recently initiated the redesign of packaging for a range of men's t-shirts, polo shirts and singlets. The original plastic bag and hanger were replaced with cardboard band wraps. This replacement eliminates 12 grams of plastic per unit. With sales of over 300 thousand garments this packaging change equates to a direct saving of around 4 tonnes of waste plastic per year.

SETTING THE STANDARD! ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS

A new ISO/TS 14048 technical specification 'Environmental management - Life cycle assessment - Data documentation format' aims to help companies evaluate the impact that a product has on the environment over its entire life.

Life cycle assessments offer a strategy for organisations to acquire sound environmental information on products and services and thereby influence decisions on materials used, production methods, distribution, and methods of disposal.

ISO/TS 14048 provides special requirements and guidelines for the preparation, conduct and review of life cycle assessment and life cycle inventory data, with a view to developing environmentally improved products and services over their whole life cycle.

ISO/TS 14048 costs 128 Swiss francs and is available from ISO national member institutes. It is the work of ISO technical committee ISO/TC 207, Environmental management, subcommittee SC 5, Life cycle assessment.
