Young Enterprise Scheme Company Of The Year Announced

Zenith Games, one of the eighteen companies selected as finalists in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) has been named the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year at the YES National Awards held in Wellington today.

Zenith Games was a participant company in YES, a programme administered by Enterprise New Zealand Trust (ENZT), to promote young entrepreneurs in schools. Under the scheme, senior secondary school students form companies and develop and market a product or service.

The company comprising eleven pupils from St Cuthbert’s College in Auckland produced ‘Take Two’ a word game similar to Scrabble designed for educational and entertainment purposes. Zenith Games has marketed the product to schools and commercial outlets, and has sold 600–800 games. The directors receive a total cash prize of $5,000 to be spent on a school project.

Noeline Cranston, supervisor for the Young Enterprise Scheme at St Cuthbert’s College, says the girls have worked extremely hard and she is proud of the relationship and coping skills they have developed through their involvement with YES.

Second prize of $3,000, the Todd Corporation Ltd Award for Young Enterprisers, was awarded to Bacchus Enterprises from Iona College with their four season’s cookbook for the Hawkes Bay.

Third prize was received by d’Agora, a company from Marlborough Girls College with their Flatter’s Guide to Life book. The company will receive the Todd Corporation Ltd Award for Young Enterprisers of $2,000.

ENZT executive director, Ken Baker said there was a wide range of products and innovative ideas that came from this year’s scheme. “I would like to congratulate all the teams for their hard work and dedication, and would like to extend my thanks to all our sponsors for supporting the scheme this year”, Mr Baker said.

Enterprise New Zealand is a charitable Trust and its mission is to promote enterprise education, economic and financial literacy and business understanding, and the development of a “can do” attitude in cooperation with New Zealand businesses.
