Guest Nights Continue Upward Trend

Guests spent 1.9 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation during August 2002, according to Statistics New Zealand. This figure is 4 percent above the August 2001 level.

The Accommodation Survey has been enhanced to include seasonally adjusted and trend series estimates for total guest nights. The underlying trend in total guest nights had been increasing since June 1998 at an average rate of 0.6 percent per month.

North Island guest nights were up 7 percent, whereas guest nights in the South Island were down 1 percent in August 2002, compared with August 2001. The Auckland region contributed 44 percent to the change in total New Zealand guest nights.
