More Staff for Sought for Increasing Production

Manufacturers are desperate to hire skilled staff to cope with increasing production. The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association latest staff recruitment and expectations survey identified some skills that are needed now. Taken in July 2002, respondents covered 50 companies with a combined staff of 4000.

Headline findings are that:

staff shortages are still chronic in the skilled trades and professional technical areas – some firms have had positions vacant for over a year

production employment is expected to increase during the next year

psychometric testing is always characterised as valuable when used

The survey looked at Sales and Marketing, R & D, Information Technology, Finance, HR & Administration, Production, and Warehousing & Distribution.

Two-thirds of respondents expected to increase their production staff and this was reflected in the anticipated need for extra Sales & Marketing and R&D staff. Vacancies exist now for skilled and professional staff in these departments.

Aptitude, skill or psychological profiling is widely used as part of the recruitment process and found very helpful, indicating that it takes more than qualifications and experience to fit the work world of today.
