Import News from the Importers Institute
A plan by 'man of integrity' Jim Anderton to extort $15 million a year from importers has been put on hold. A fee of $18
on every commercial importation was planned to come into force on 1 July.
However, Mr Anderton's appetite for your money was supplanted by Prime Minister Helen Clark's desire to save her
political skin by calling an early election under some pretext or other. As it happens, they ran out of time to pass the
necessary law through parliament.
The Customs Service advised that the legislation, which has been considered by a select committee, will be carried
forward for the new parliament to consider after the election.
