Growth in Guest Nights
Continues
Guests spent 1.9 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation during September 2001, according to latest figures from Statistics New Zealand. This figure is 10 per cent above the September 2000 level.
Apart from Waikato, where guest nights fell by 2 per cent, all regions recorded more guest nights in September 2001 than in September 2000. South Island guest nights grew 11 per cent, while North Island guest nights were up 9 per cent. Six of the 12 regions recorded guest night growth of 10 per cent or more, when compared with September 2000. Auckland recorded the largest regional rise, up 18 per cent.
Of the accommodation types, backpackers/hostels recorded the largest growth in guest nights, with a 14 per cent rise compared with September 2000, followed by hotels with a 13 per cent rise.
