Spencer Creates Largest Independent Corporate ISP

October 30 2001

New Zealand’s leading independent, carrier neutral ISP has tripled penetration of its corporate and residential markets with the acquisition of Asia-On Line’s assets and customer base for an undisclosed sum.

Announcing the move, Mr Michael Spencer, CEO of eSurf Wireless, said although he was unable to disclose details of the financial settlement, the purchase reflected the commitment of the Spencer family to the New Zealand Internet market.

“We view the acquisition of Asia On Line’s assets and customer base as a natural progression of our investment in the New Zealand market.

The Spencer family has established interests in a number of Internet services including ISP’s and wireless connectivity.

Mr Spencer highlighted the obvious customer benefits of combining the infrastructure assets of eSurf wireless and Asia On Line, including increased redundancy in the networks; secure managed service offerings to all customers, wireless connectivity, and VPNs. The two businesses will operate separate tele-housed networks to complete a fully redundant operation.

Existing customers will continue to receive all services currently provided by Asia On Line and the new operation expects to retain core competency skills provided by Asia On Line staff.
