South Island Guest Nights Drive Increase
Guests spent 1.8 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation during August 2001, according to Statistics New Zealand's Accommodation Survey. This figure is 11 per cent above August 2000 levels. South Island guest nights accounted for 60 per cent of this increase.
South Island guest nights increased 16 per cent in August 2001 when compared with August 2000. All South Island regions recorded guest night growth of 10 per cent or more, with Canterbury leading the way, up 22 per cent. Guest nights in the North Island were up 8 per cent. Apart from Wellington, all North Island regions recorded more guest nights in August 2001 than in August 2000.
All accommodation types recorded guest night growth of 10 per cent or more in August 2001, compared with August 2000. Caravan parks/camping grounds recorded the largest growth in guest nights, up 16 per cent.
