Exports Trend Rises
The updated value of merchandise exports for the August 2001 month is $2,640 million, according to latest figures released by Statistics New Zealand. This value is $10 million less than the early estimate published on the 27 September 2001. The data shows a rising exports trend and a flat imports trend. This has caused the trade balance trend to rise.
The value of merchandise imports for August 2001 is $2,747 million. The deficit of $107 million is 4.1 per cent of the value of exports for the month. Deficits of more than 4.1 per cent of exports have occurred in nine out of the 10 previous August months.
The updated value of merchandise exports for the year ended August 2001 is $32,606 million, which is an increase of 21.6 per cent from the previous August year.
The updated merchandise trade balance for the year ended August 2001 is a surplus of $311 million. This compares with a deficit for the previous August year of $3,089 million (which included $631 million for the import of the frigate HMNZS Te Mana, as well as several large aircraft).
