14 August 2001 - New Food Labelling Requirements

A new Food Code will require more information on labels, from December 2002. From 7 December 2001, there will also be new labelling requirements for genetically modified foods.

Food importers, manufacturers and retailers will need to be familiar with the new requirements. The Ministry of Health will be running a series of workshops that will:

· Describe how food regulation in New Zealand will work

· Set the scene for the Joint Food Code

· Describe how the standards work and their key features

· Present guidelines and fact sheets

· Discuss examples, including inter-relationships between standards

· Answer questions

The workshops will run from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm on:

Friday 17 August Wellington Hutt Hospital, High Street, Lower Hutt

Monday 20 Hamilton, Le Grand Hotel, 237 Victoria Street

Tuesday 21 Auckland, Lakeside Convention Centre, Montgomerie Road, Manukau

Wednesday 22 Christchurch, Rydges Christchurch, Cnr Oxford Terrace & Worchester

Thursday 23 Dunedin Quality Hotel, Upper Moray Place
