A Favourite Pastime Features On Children’s Health Stamps
Cycling, a favourite pastime for many New Zealanders is to feature in this year’s Children’s Health stamps issue to be
released on 1 August. In a recent Hillary Commission survey, cycling was voted amongst the top ten New Zealand physical
activities.
“This year’s stamps are likely to appeal to the adventurous and fun-loving who appreciate cycling and the New Zealand
scenery,” says Linda Morgan, New Zealand Post Stamps Design Manager.
The 40 cent (plus 5 cent donation) self-adhesive stamp captures the exuberance of the world on two wheels and is titled
‘Out Riding’. ‘Family Time’ is the 40 cent gummed stamp (plus 5 cent donation) which features a family cycling together,
while the 90 cent stamp (plus 5 cent donation) ‘Catching Air’ shows mountain biking.
Health stamps raise money for New Zealand children by carrying an additional 5 cent surcharge that is donated to
Children’s Health Camps. There are seven Children’s Health Camps throughout New Zealand which provide a supportive and
healthy environment where children and their families can gain long-term skills and confidence through a variety of
programmes. Last year, $119,600 was raised from the sale of Health stamps.
“We welcome New Zealand Post’s continuing support of Health Camps. The first official Health stamp was issued in 1929.
The funds from the sale of the stamps assist us with the running of camp programmes and allow us to continue to provide
fun activities as well as specialist care,” says Sandy MacGillivray, National spokesperson for the Health Camps’ stamps
campaign.
This year’s stamps, first day covers, miniature sheet and ten stamp sheetlet were designed by Comm Arts Design and
printed by Southern Colour Print. They can be purchased from New Zealand Post retail outlets, regional Stamps Centres
and the Stamps Centre in Wanganui from 1 August, 2001.
