Guest Night Growth Continues
Accommodation Survey: May 2001
Guests spent 1.5 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation during May 2001, according to latest figures from Statistics New Zealand. This figure is 9 per cent above the May 2000 level.
All regions recorded higher guest nights in May 2001 than in May 2000. South Island guest nights increased 12 per cent, while North Island guest nights were up 7 per cent.
Of the accommodation types, backpackers/hostels recorded the largest growth in guest nights, with a 12 per cent rise from May 2000, followed by hotels with an 11 per cent rise.
Excluding caravan parks/camping grounds, the occupancy rate for short-term accommodation in May 2001 was 42 per cent, up from 39 per cent in May 2000.
Excluding caravan parks/camping grounds, accommodation capacity for May 2001 was 4 per cent higher than in May 2000.
