Consider The Facts Says Trucking Industry
The substantial environmental, safety and economic benefits a move to heavier and longer trucks offers New Zealand is why sensible thought must be given to the soon to be released Land Transport Safety Authority discussion document on the issue, Road Transport Forum NZ chief executive Tony Friedlander said today.
“Wide-ranging and detailed research into heavier trucks has been invested in by Transit and other organisations over several years. That research and its findings warrant serious consideration by policy-makers.
“The fact that the Greens have apparently made up their minds before they have even seen the Transit proposal and before they have considered the facts it is based on verges on irresponsible. It seems surprising that a political party with an environmental focus is unprepared to even consider the major environmental benefits the introduction of these trucks would offer,” said Mr Friedlander.
“If New Zealand is to lift its standard of living and safeguard the environment, it is important that a more rational approach to policy making is taken by all of our political leaders.”
Mr Friedlander said the Green’s knee-jerk reaction was not a rational or responsible way to address policy which has the potential to significantly benefit all New Zealanders.
