‘A Better Dairy Deal’

MEDIA RELEASE

‘A Better Dairy Deal’

31 May 2001
GLOBAL CO:
‘A BETTER DAIRY DEAL’ –
FARMERS FOR A BETTER DAIRY DEAL

Today, Mark Masters – Past President of Dairy Farmers of New Zealand – announced the formation of a ‘Better Dairy Deal’.

“We are committed to a growing, prosperous NZ dairy industry. It is vital for dairy farmers, NZ consumers and the NZ economy, said spokesperson Mark Masters.

“But we sincerely believe that Global Co is not the right approach – in fact it may be the worst of all worlds”.

“We are very concerned that farmers have never been given all the information or any other option. The industry leaders have always said it is one NZ company or nothing.”

“This is not a healthy basis on which to make one of the most important decisions of our lives”, said Mark Masters.

“A group of us realised we had a duty to outline on paper what the real alternatives are before its too late.”

“We call it the ‘Better Dairy Deal’. We want to get this paper to you so that you can see the options –so that you have a real choice.”

Mark Masters said he will be formally asking Global Co today to send out the “Better Dairy Deal” all dairy farmers.

“As a shareholder, I have the right to have this material sent to all other shareholders in the lead up to the 18 June vote”, said Mark Masters.

“In fact, our leaders have a responsibility to ensure that all farmers get the opportunity to evaluate properly Global Co against the likely alternatives”.

‘Farmers for a Better Dairy Deal’ will be formally launched at a press conference next week – time, date and venue will be announced shortly. Those involved in the Group will also be announced at next week’s press conference.

The ‘Better Dairy Deal’ will also have its own web site: www.dairynz.org
[to be launched early next week].

Mark Masters emphasised his message to dairy farmers today -

“DO NOT DECIDE HOW YOU WILL VOTE
UNTIL YOU HAVE THE ALTERNATIVES.”

“ITS NOT GLOBALCO OR NOTHING.
THERE ARE BETTER ALTERNATIVES
WORTHY OF YOUR SERIOUS CONSIDERATION.”

“We have NEVER been shown any serious analysis of the alternatives. This is simply no way to make such a big decision”, concluded Mr Masters.

“It is NOT one company or Global Co or nothing. There IS a better option.”

Our group wants to provide everyone with a clear analysis of the alternatives. Then farmers can make an informed choice in voting on June 18”.
