Discussion with mediator confirms time to move on
A discussion with the South Island ports dispute mediator Walter Grills today had confirmed that further mediation in the dispute would be unproductive, Jay Goodenbour, Carter Holt Harvey Chief Operating Officer, says.
"Mr Grills has our thanks for genuinely seeking every way he can to end this dispute".
"However today's discussions uncovered no new paths to a resolution other than those previously put forward by Mainland and Carter Holt Harvey. These continue to be rejected by the WWU leaving us with limited options but to continue with legal means to ensure our products are loaded without interference."
As it has from the outset of the dispute, Carter Holt Harvey remains open to proposals from alternative stevedoring firms which may be able to offer superior value to the company in its log loading operations.
The company withdrew from mediation earlier this week after waiting six weeks for a reply from the WWU to a compromise proposal.
Mr Goodenbour says Carter Holt Harvey appreciated Mr Grills's public support for the company's position and had been happy to meet his request for today's meeting.
"However, we think it has become obvious to
everyone that it is time to move on."
