PATA Sponsor ‘Young Professional Award’

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has announced sponsorship of a PATA Young Tourism Professional Award – a special award to recognise the contribution of young tourism professionals in the New Zealand tourism industry

PATA is the largest organisation of its kind in the world, incorporating 1500 of the world’s travel leaders. It is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

This is the first year for the Award, which will be presented along with the other winners at the 2001 New Zealand Tourism Awards in August in Rotorua.

“The PATA Young Tourism Professional Award aims to recognise a young professional working in the tourism industry,” Tourism Industry Association spokesman Simon King said today.

“PATA wants to encourage one of the tourism industry’s up and coming ‘stars’, with a special award that will encourage the winner to seek further training in the tourism field. To cope with the expected growth of tourism in New Zealand over the next few years, the industry needs motivated young New Zealanders who are committed to the tourism industry. This award will help foster that commitment,” Mr King said.

Anyone can nominate someone for the award, or young tourism professionals can self-nominate with endorsement from someone in the tourism industry. Nominees must be between 24 - 34 years old as at 1 March 2001 and need to submit one page outlining reasons to support their nomination and their contact details. The judges will consider nominees’ service to the tourism industry, their commitment to the development of tourism and their vision on future tourism in New Zealand.

The winner of the Award will have $1,500 available to put towards further business studies/professional development approved by the trustees of the New Zealand chapter of PATA.

Nominations must be received at the TIA offices no later than Friday 29 June 2001 – email: jo@tianz.org.nz; fax:04 4990827 or sent to Jo Darby, TIANZ, P O Box 1697, Wellington.
