Continuing Strong Growth in TV Advertising Sales

Television Networks report Continuing Strong Growth in Advertising Sales

Network television advertising sales for the October-December 1999 quarter grew at 5.5 per cent over the same period in 1998 according to figures released today by the New Zealand Television Broadcasters’ Council.

The sales figures for the three months ending 31 December 1999 show “a very encouraging trend” according to Bruce Wallace, Executive Director of the NZTBC, which represents the free to air channels – TVOne, TV2, TV3, TV4 and Prime.

He said the increase for the last quarter of the calendar year resulted from growth in the economy, a strong pre-Christmas retail period and election-related advertising. The strong upturn in television advertising was first evident in the third quarter when sales grew by 4.6 per cent on the same period in 1998. He said that television advertising sales usually rose ahead of the growth in the economy and it was clear from economic data that the economy was growing strongly.

Mr Wallace predicted that the annual advertising sales for all television for the full 1999 year would be significantly higher than last year’s total of $473 million.
