Capital Goods Price Index: September 2000 quarter

Increase in Capital Asset Prices Continues

Capital asset prices increased 1.1 per cent in the September 2000 quarter, according to latest figures from Statistics New Zealand. "The result is the largest quarterly increase for the Capital Goods Price Index since the March 1992 quarter," Deputy Government Statistician Ian Ewing said today.

The All Groups index has increased for six consecutive quarters and is now 3.6 per cent higher than in the March 1999 quarter. This is the first sustained period of increasing capital asset prices since early 1995.

All major asset groups within the Capital Goods Price Index increased in the September 2000 quarter. The most significant contributions to this quarter's increase came from price increases for the plant, machinery and equipment group and for the transport equipment group, both of which are made up largely of imported assets. Respondents reported that the lower New Zealand dollar had an impact on prices of imported assets.
