FIJI TO LAUNCH "CUT PRICE" HOLIDAYS FOR NEW ZEALANDERS

Fiji is launching aggressive cut price holiday packages at the weekend in bid to win back New Zealand tourists.

Airfares are being slashed by $400 from normal high season rates and most of the major resorts and hotels are offering discounts of between 30 to 40 percent.

There is no blackout for the coming school holidays in September.

Air Pacific, Fiji's international Airline, and Air New Zealand are both offering first-in-first-served return airfares from Auckland at $499.

Those missing out on the $499 seats allocated on each flight can still get a good deal at $599 return.

Fares from Wellington are $50 more, and from Christchurch $100.

The low fares will be available for purchase from Sunday ( August 27) to September, 30 with payment and ticketing no later than October 6.

Travel must be completed by December 15.

Fiji Visitor Bureau regional director for New Zealand, Penny Henderson, said the packages were based on a minimum five day stay and up to 21 days.

She said most of the major resorts and hotels were also offering food and drink credits of $100 for five day stays.

"With the New Zealand Government now acknowledging that it is safe to travel to the resorts in the western area of Viti Levu, including the outer islands, we are confident that New Zealanders will return to Fiji," she said.

Ms Henderson said that before the recent political crisis, New Zealanders were set to break an all-time visitors record.

The current record of 72,000 Kiwis holidaying in Fiji over a 12 months period is likely to fall to around 35,000 over the next 12 months.

Over-all tourist arrivals in Fiji before the crisis were 1600 a day, which fell to around 400.

"We're hoping that the low fares and resort packages will be sufficient to encourage New Zealanders to take advantage of the tremendous savings offered."
