Visitor Stats More Good News - Aussie GST Boost Expected

The international visitor arrival statistics released today mirror the optimistic and widespread confidence in the Tourism sector, revealed in the Tourism Industry Outlook survey released last month, Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ) Chief Executive Glenys Coughlan said.

"The May statistics show strong growth in most markets, and the continuing strengthening of the Japanese market, up three percent for the month.

"The 10 percent increase for the year ended May 2000 is pleasing and continues to show the effect of positioning New Zealand as a quality tourist destination.

"The Tourism Industry Association's May Tourism Industry Outlook, published in association with Ernst and Young, highlighted strong confidence in the growth potential of all international visitor markets.

"The survey highlighted operator expectations that the Japanese market was turning around and these figures confirm that.

"The sustained growth out of Australia is expected to be boosted with the introduction of GST in Australia from July 1. This should further stimulate this market, as price relativity moves in New Zealand's favour," Ms Coughlan said.
