Intel Boosts Workstation Performance

NEWS RELEASE

Intel Boosts Workstation Performance With New Processors
Processors Target Fast-Growing Workstation Market Segment

AUCKLAND, April. 12 2000 - Intel New Zealand has announced two new powerful processors targeting high-performing Intel-based workstations. The new Intel Pentium® III Xeon™ and the Pentium® III processors deliver increased performance through faster megahertz speeds, Advanced Transfer Cache, an enhanced front side bus, and multiprocessing capabilities. As Web content, e-Business, and online collaboration increasingly play a more important role in the Internet economy, the workstation industry- and Intel®-based workstations' role in that industry - also continues to grow rapidly worldwide.

Intel announced that now more than twenty original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) market Intel-based workstations worldwide based on the Pentium III Xeon or Pentium III processors, in a variety of form factors, speeds, processors and frequencies.

The Internet economy is allowing corporations to adapt to business 'rules', demanding a seamless integration of the enterprise impacting all workstation users. The growth of Intel-based workstations help to integrate the customer's design, marketing, sales, and manufacturing processes, increasing the organisation’s agility, innovation and efficiency.

"Intel architecture continues to enable powerful workstation solutions to meet the increasing demands of the Internet-driven economy," said Scott Gilmour, General Manager, Intel New Zealand. "In 2000, we will continue to increase the performance of our high-performing Pentium III processor and our Pentium III Xeon processors, making it an exciting year for Intel-based workstation customers."

Intel® Pentium III Xeon™ Processor
The Pentium III Xeon processor at 866 MHz provides end-users with the power and performance to manage increasingly complex projects, by reducing design time and working more efficiently. Systems based on these processors target mid-range and high-end workstations, especially in such areas as CAD/CAE, Digital Content Creation (DCC) and Electronic Design Automation (EDA).

The Pentium III Xeon processor combined with the Intel® 840 chipset offers enhanced system features and capabilities including the 133 MHz system bus, dual PCI support (64-bit and 32-bit), graphics support for AGP 4x and dual RDRAM memory channels with up to 2 Gbytes of memory support. Intel's latest processor and chipset technologies complement the graphics subsystem allowing greater texturing, more fluid movements, and better display output, enabling "e-creation" for the Internet and the flexibility and scalability necessary to power better visualisation and more complex analysis.

The Pentium III Xeon processor offers unique features such as on cartridge voltage regulation, integrated manage ability features, a longer product life cycle and larger cache varieties. This provides added system availability, superior performance and room to grow (scalability) necessary in today's growing Internet economy.

The Pentium III Processor
Intel also offers the Pentium® III processor 866 MHz 256K advanced transfer cache with 133 MHz system bus, the best choice for entry level workstations, targeting vertical industries such as financial services and software development.

The latest Intel-based workstation platforms based on this processor offer leadership performance at lower price points by providing increased memory bandwidth, dual PCI, and AGP 4X for enhanced performance at an affordable price. When combined with the Intel® 840 chipset, the new Pentium III processor offers scalable performance and features for dual processor workstations and new graphics through AGP Pro 50, which provides greater electrical power and real estate to host high performance components.

Pricing and Availability
Availability will be from May onwards. The Pentium III processor at 866 MHz is priced at US$776 in 1,000-unit quantities and the Pentium III Xeon processor at 866 MHz priced at US$826 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.co.nz
