Import News from the Importers Institute
11 April 2000 - Electrical and Gas Appliance Safety
The Ministry of Commerce announced some important planned changes to the safety regimes for electrical and gas
appliances, and invites interested importers and manufacturers to attend one of two forums being conducted to clarify
the changes, contribute views, and discuss future developments.
The changes are important to all manufacturers and suppliers of gas and electrical appliances because they have a
significant effect on obligations. The future developments are important because they could have a significant effect on
compliance costs for industry, allow greater freedom in getting appliances to the market, and provide opportunities to
enhance safety.
The forums will address both electrical and gas obligations, as both regimes are moving towards alignment with each
other based primarily around Supplier Declaration systems and towards alignment, as far as appropriate, with Australian
regimes.
