Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Amanda Vanstone, today congratulated the National Crime Authority on the
success of its latest tax fraud investigation.
Five people have been arrested in connection with a building and construction industry scam which involved sham labour
hire companies in New South Wales - a sophisticated tax evasion scheme known in the building industry as 'the bodgie.'
"This case highlights the diversity and complexity of the investigative work undertaken by our national law enforcement
agencies," Senator Vanstone said.
"Co-operation between Commonwealth agencies, in this case particularly with the Australian Taxation office plus
assistance from Australian Federal Police and Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, was vital in securing
these arrests.
"This investigation has been underway for some time. I congratulate the investigators involved for their dedication and
determination to ensure a successful outcome in terms of arrests and seizure of documents."
