Businesses and the community alike in New South Wales will significantly benefit from the information delivered at the Sydney Y2K Infrastructure Forum, Senator Ian Campbell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Information technology and the Arts, said today.
'All businesses, and particularly small to medium enterprises, need to develop appropriate contingency measures as part of Year 2000 preparations,' Senator Campbell said during his address at the Forum.
'The information and strategies outlined by presenters at today's Forum will provide businesses in New South Wales with an up-to-date understanding of how their key service providers are placed in addressing the Year 2000 issue.
'The factual information provided by sectors including electricity, water, banking, aviation and fuel will assist businesses to plan proper contingencies and build investor and consumer confidence.'
Senator Campbell said the Infrastructure Forums held in other capital cities had been a resounding success, and highlighted the advanced level of Year 2000 preparedness across a range of sectors. Senator Campbell congratulated the NSW Government for its enthusiastic approach to the Forum.
'It is in the interests of the business sector and broader community to understand the national 'state-of-play' regarding the Year 2000 issue,' said Senator Campbell.
'Addressing the Year 2000 issue requires teamwork between businesses and governments. I acknowledge the efforts of New South Wales and other states and territories in this important endeavour.
'The quality and transparency of information shared at the Forums, the co-ordination and co-operation of rival corporations, and Commonwealth, State and Territory government reporting have helped place Australia at the forefront of international Y2K preparedness.'
