108,000 Aucklanders Not Enroled To Vote!

Published: Thu 25 Nov 1999 09:34 AM
Over 108,000 Aucklanders have today and tomorrow to get registered on the Electoral Roll or be banned from voting.
That's like half the number of people living in Manukau City. And with some many people not on the roll.
Nationwide there are 270,000 people not enrolled to vote. And that has the Electoral Enrolment Centre campaigning hard to gather in those who have yet to register.
Aucklanders in particular are being asked to make sure they, their friends, and family are on the Electoral Roll.
Why? Because you vote will count.
The Electoral Enrolment Centre National Manager Murray Wicks says eligible electors must enrol by mailing their completed enrolment form with New Zealand Post or enrolling at a Post Shop by tomorrow. This will ensure they can cast a valid vote on Polling Day. Electors cannot enrol on Polling Day.
“Eligible electors can enrol at any Post Shop, or can get an enrolment form by visiting the elections website at www.elections.org.nz,” Murray Wicks says.
Many people are not sure if they are on the roll or not. Mr Wicks says the elections website is receiving on average 1,000 hits a day from people checking their enrolment status.
Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day that eligible electors can enrol to vote in the general election.
Here are the facts.
To date:
* 2,485,000 are currently enrolled - 90% of the eligible voting population
* 270,000 eligible electors are currently not enrolled
* 41% of those not enrolled are in the 18-29 age group
* 67% of those not enrolled are in the 18-39 age group
* 40% of those not enrolled live in the Auckland region.
