Parker Ordered To Pay Damages

Len Parker, the pensioner who barricaded himself inside a Housing New Zealand house has been ordered to pay the cost of repairs to the property.

Mr Parker was protesting against the Government's market rent policy for state house rents. His partial rent strike lasted for six years. He refused to pay more than 25 per cent of his income to HNZ for rent due.

He barricaded himself into his Balmoral, Auckland, home in June after HNZ tried to evict him. He and two supporters remained inside the fortified house until a morning raid saw police smash their way through the roof. Mr Parker was arrested, but later released. HNZ took him to the tenancy tribunal. The Tribunal has ordered Mr Parker to pay more than $2000 for the costs of repairs to the Balmoral state house.

New tenants are now living in home.
