Superyachts are motor and sailing vessels in excess of 30 metres in length. Currently there are over 2,400 vessels registered in the world with 380 under construction.

On average, new vessels are being constructed at a rate of 200 worldwide per year, ranging in value from NZ$4 million to over NZ$40 million.

The vessels usually employ six crew including a captain, chef, engineers and stewards. The vessels voyage globally and are presented in pristine condition. They often have luxury extras on board like jetskis, support vessels and sometimes a car and helicopter.

It costs around 10-15 percent of a yachts purchase price to maintain and run per year.

Refits can cost as much as NZ$5 million and take a year to complete. A paint job could cost as much as US$985,000 and take six months to finish. Refits can include complete interiors and hull modification. The vessels tend to be refitted quite often because of limited new build availability and limited construction times.

United Yacht Transport are making 2 trips to New Zealand. The transport ship will carry up to 24 yachts at a time on its deck, vastly increasing the number and types of vessels coming to New Zealand, and opening the door to the Pacific for vessels that normally cannot make ocean passages.

Not only home to base headquarters for 11 syndicates, the Village features a state-of-the-art purpose built marina designed with luxury superyachts in mind.

Over 90 berths for vessels 25 metres and over will be available for rental from September 1999, with limited numbers available prior.

Marina berthing is Mediterranean-style with a deadman mooring system for bow lines and a floating walkway adjacent to the land facilitating stern berthage. Twelve metre finger pontoons between berths are provided on most berths and berthing will be ably assisted in all areas by experienced marina staff. A tug and inflatable boats will assist with docking and providing lines.

Berths range in size from 25 metres up to 60 metres, with a range of services provided including power, up to 250 amps 3 phase, telecommunications, fuel, water, and sewerage pumpout. Discreet but vigilant security will be active for the duration of the America's Cup.

The Village is geared to operate as a unique full service provisioning facility with everything from flowers, fresh produce and champagne to chandlery and marine related services. In addition, rental car, travel agency, banking, catering, corporate hosting and other services will be available.
