A co-ordinated marketing programme to entice more overseas students to Auckland tertiary education institutions is to be supported by Auckland City.
New Zealand's international education programme earns about $500 million in foreign exchange and Auckland has about 2700 foreign students enrolled in the four major tertiary institutions, earning over $8o million for the city.
"Through our Sister City programme we have the opportunity to access overseas students," says Councillor Victoria Carter. "The city benefits from an increase in student numbers because they must support themselves during their stay here with food, clothing and travel."
It is estimated that by the year 2003 foreign exchange earnings could exceed $1 billion.
