Auckland City has agreed that there needs to be room for 176,000 more people, than allowed for in the present district plan, as its share of regional population growth over the next 50 years. The Liveable Communities 2050 strategy will ensure this happens in a way that does no damage to quality of life or the environment.

"Aucklanders want their children and grandchildren to be able to live here too," says Deputy mayor Dr Bruce Hucker.

"The city doesn't want to go the infill housing route. Instead we are identifying particular areas, such as along existing transport corridors, which will be suitable for higher population density."

"We want to plan 'with' communities rather than 'for' communities. Their own issues must be taken into account. We want to encourage mixed communities rather than ghettoes at either end of the scale.

"To help achieve this, we have also developed design guidelines to protect privacy and amenities."

The consultation process will include public meetings and other measures, says Dr Hucker. As a result of these meetings, Liveable Community Plans will be drawn up, identifying the sort of growth that will take place in the designated areas, the first two of which are Avondale and Panmure.

These plans will ensure communities are able to determine for themselves how they should develop.
