Apec Police Media Briefing - 8.30am 10.09.99

Published: Fri 10 Sep 1999 12:37 AM
Major points from the morning briefing 10.09.99
Primary issue again was traffic. A release on this issue was sent early this morning.
The other issue raised was use of firearms, previously covered by local media.
Senior Sergeant Dave Pearson said in response to questions from foreign journalists:
It has earlier been reported that a limited number of staff travelling with VIPs have been authorised to carry firearms.
As is normal in New Zealand, some Police are armed as a matter of course, including the Police VIP security staff.
For security reasons, Police will not release details of who has requested authority to carry firearms and how many, or who has been granted approval.
Security at APEC is the overall responsibility of the New Zealand Police, who are in control. Command and control is not the role of staff from any other contributing country.
The public will not see weapons overtly displayed.
Notice of Media Briefing
This will take place at 0800 hours, Saturday 11 September, 1999, in the ground floor of the Bledisloe Building, old Information Centre, at the Wellesley Street end.
