Horrors Told Of East Timor Violence - East Timorese refugees evacuated to Darwin tell of unimaginable horrors, like the shooting of a baby snatched from his father’s arms. United Nations is accusing the Indonesian troops of participating in the brutality. Hundreds of people have been decapitated. Thousands have been loaded onto trucks and taken to who knows where. Australian troops have been put on 24 hour alert. But Prime minister John Howard warns it cannot go into East Timor without Indonesian approval, if Australia goes in Indonesia says it will be an invasion.
Red Cross Attacked - Relief organisations have not been spared the rapid advance of violence in East Timor, the Red Cross compound in Dili was attacked several times yesterday with staff there herded out at gunpoint. The eleven foreign workers have since been evacuated to Australia. The Red Cross is upset at having to leave after some workers having been in Dili for up to 20 years.
APEC Agenda Perfect for Timor Talks - APEC Auckland is being described as a unique opportunity for the world leaders involved. Director of APEC studies at Auckland University, says it is the only time for leaders of the 21 APEC countries to get together. The conference concentrates on freeing up world trade, but even the formal part of the agenda, the director says, provides some rare opportunity. He says while East Timor is not on the formal agenda, it will be the major issue in the background conference.
