Lotto Boss Quits - The controversy over his $400,000 salary has proved too much. Lotteries Commission chief executive David Bale has resigned. In a statement released a few minutes ago David Bale says it is apparent that comments made by the Prime Minister show he does not have her confidence. He says he will work out a 90 day period as required by his contract. David Bale has thanked his family, friends, and staff for their support over the past 12 years. Yesterday the Government gave a ticking off to the State Services Commissioner for not telling it about the size of Mr Bale’s salary.

National Can’t Get Tax Cuts Through - Labour sees the collapse of the National Tax Talks as a vindication of Labour’s tax policy. National will now not put tax cut legislation before the House until after the election because it has failed to get the numbers. Labour finance spokesperson Michael Cullen says his party plans to raise tax on incomes over $60,000 to 39 cents in the dollar. This, he says, actually has more support.

Support For Striking Nurses - Striking nurses at Tauranga Hospital appear to have the public on their side, gauged by all the toots from passing motorists. The nurses are on strike until Friday morning in support of their pay claims. It’s a visual action with some wearing operating theatre gowns and many carrying placards.
