Marlborough Roads advises that the maximum axle weight for heavy commercial vehicles crossing Blenheim’s High Street bridge has been reduced by 50 per cent. A recent load testing of the bridge, which was built in 1913 and spans the Taylor River between Lee Street and Brook Street, revealed its overall strength had declined.

Signage will be put in place advising drivers of the new weight restriction.

High Street is not a major thoroughfare for heavy vehicles so the change is not expected to have a major impact on road users.

Investigations are underway to determine whether the bridge can be strengthened or replaced, with any works expected to be completed by 2030. Budget is allocated in Council’s Long-Term Plan; the design process will get underway next year with construction expected to begin in 2028.

School Bridge on Morse Street in Wairau Valley township has also had its weight restriction decreased to 80% of Class 1 at 30km/h due to deterioration of its timber beams. Design options for this crossing are also being considered.
