Waterworld Temporarily Closing For Upgrades

Hamilton’s largest aquatic and fitness facility, Waterworld, will close for four weeks from mid-June to kickstart maintenance and upgrades including repairing fire damage from 2022.

The closure, from 16 June - 13 July, will allow for the first phase of construction work, including the refurbishment of changing rooms, some new flooring and heating systems, and updated group fitness and function rooms.

Liz Cann, Hamilton City Council’s Aquatics Director, says the work has been a long time coming.

“We have to look after the facilities we have, to make sure they’re meeting the needs of our customers, are safe, and maintained well,” said Cann.

“It’s going to be an exciting year and at the end of it, Waterworld will look a lot more like a modern and a great place to visit.

“We know closures are disappointing for our regular customers, but it means we can complete the work faster, cheaper and without the health and safety risk to customers.”

When Waterworld reopens on 14 July, there will continue to be some construction.

“Throughout this year we’ll continue staged upgrades and maintenance, but they won’t require another full closure. That work will include fixing the fire damage in the spa, sauna and steam rooms, and a more modern fitness space with variety.”

“Waterworld receives around 400,000 visits annually and this investment is about looking after what we have and meeting the growing community demand and expectations.”

During the closure, gym and swim lesson memberships will be paused and alternative services will be offered at Gallagher Aquatic Centre and Beerescourt Bowling Club.
