Biannual Oriental Bay Sand Shift Happening Next Week

Wellington City Council will carry out its scheduled biannual sand shift at Oriental Bay from Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 May – weather permitting.

The work involves moving sand from Freyberg Beach to Oriental Bay to maintain the size and shape of the beaches.

To ensure public safety while heavy machinery is operating, both beaches will be closed to the public. The closure will be clearly signposted, and Council staff will be on-site to assist and provide information where required.

The maintenance work is part of the on-going efforts to preserve the look and function of Pōneke’s waterfront beaches, helping to off-set the natural movement of sand along the coastline.
