Week On Our Streets
Road users are encouraged to use alternate routes where possible and we’ll do our best to keep any delays to a minimum. Traffic management may be in place to make sure road users, including people on bikes and pedestrians, can navigate these areas safely while work is under way. Works and dates are subject to change based on factors such as wet weather and staff availability.
Residents, pedestrians and people on bikes will continue to have access unless specified below.
Upcoming works/delays
Hunter Street – road closure
Hunter Street (from the intersection with Pembroke Street) will be closed Wednesday 14 May, from 7am – 6pm for gas maintenance work. Traffic can access Hunter Street via Clarence Street.
There are planned contingency days (Thursday 15 May and Friday 16 May) in case work takes longer than expected.
Te Kowhai Road – road closure
Te Kowhai Road (from the Boulevard to Tasman Road) will be closed Sunday 18 May, from 6am – 6.30pm for resurfacing of the rail crossing. Pedestrians and people on bikes are to follow instructions from traffic management.

School speed limit
changes
Variable 30km/h
speed limits were introduced around 12 Hamilton schools from
the start of Term 2 on28 April 2025, and they
operateduring school pick-up and drop-off times. Outside
of these times, the speed limits are either 40km/h or
50km/h.
These changes are in response to the Government’s new speed limit rules which have impacted roads around schools nationally.
New variable speed limit signs clearly state when the variable speed limit applies, and electronic signs were installed on busy roads or areas where it would be difficult for drivers to notice the signs. For details and maps of the affected areas, visit hamilton.govt.nz/schoolspeedlimits
Reminder
Please follow instructions from the work crews. Thank you for your patience and understanding – it is appreciated.
Occasionally, major events may require a lane or road closure to support the smooth running of an event. For minor works, please refer to the minor roadworks page.
