Seeding Self-Sustaining Arts Projects

Kāpiti Coast District Council is seeking new initiatives that will help bring exciting arts events to life. Council’s Arts Sustainability Fund has $17,700 available to help establish new and aspirational arts activities that have the potential to grow into ongoing, self-supporting initiatives.

Brendan Owens, Group Manager Customer and Community, says the arts play an important role in our cultural and economic landscape and Council wants to support the development and long-term sustainability of local arts initiatives and organisations.

“Kāpiti is home to a thriving arts sector that creates economic, cultural, and social benefits to the district and beyond,” Mr Owens said.

“We want to provide more opportunity for Kāpiti arts and cultural communities to create and sustain inspirational and aspirational initiatives for the Kāpiti Coast District, whether that is in performance, literary, visual, traditional arts, or something completely different.

“We’re on the lookout for new arts activities and events that have the potential to become arts and cultural attractions for the Kāpiti Coast District.

“We’re excited to work with applicants and see the amazing projects that will grow out of this seed funding,” Mr Owens said.

Artists and organisations can apply for three-year funding to support the development of new and aspirational initiatives, practices, or activities that have the potential to significantly contribute to the creative fabric of the Kāpiti district.

Previous recipients include Writers’ Practice for the upcoming Bookmark Kāpiti - Kāpiti Coast’s first ever festival of books, the Ōtaki Pottery Club’s successful Matariki Star Glaze festival, the well-received Beachside Harmony barbershop chorus, and Kia Emiemi, the collaborative project between Toi Mahara and Te Wananga ki Raukawa which led to their amazing exhibition He kete, he whiri, he tangata last year.

This fund complements other funding opportunities available through the Council such as the Creative Communities Scheme, support for the Kāpiti Coast Art Trail, the Museum and Heritage Development Fund, the Māori Economic Development Grants Fund, and the Major Events Fund, which support our cultural tourism sector.

Applicants must contact artsadmin@kapiticoast.govt.nz to discuss their proposal before preparing a submission. Applications close 5pm 28 May.
