Hutt City Council Storm Update- Road Closures And Restrictions

Marine Drive: closed until approximately 10.30am

The decision has been made to close Marine Drive for travel in both directions, except for emergency vehicles, for approximately two hours either side of high tide (8.40am).

Wainuiomata Hill Road: both lanes open until 10am

Assessments show there’s been no further slips overnight where the one lane is closed, so both lanes will be opened for peak traffic travelling to Lower Hutt this morning.

A decision may be made to reduce lanes again at 10am to pull down potentially loose material and mitigate further slippage. This activity may take a number of hours. Please allow additional time if you need to drive over the hill and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

Port Road

Port Road remained closed overnight due to flooding and the potential for water to enter nearby properties. Further updates will be provided.

  • Stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • If you need to travel this morning, plan ahead as strong winds can make driving hazardous.
  • Take special care on coastal roads and properties as there may be debris and large swells.
  • Severe wind gusts like these will damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and can cause threat to life from flying items and falling trees.
  • Destructive winds can cause widespread damage including powerlines and roofs, with dangerous driving conditions and significant disruption to transport and power supply.
  • Some areas are experiencing power outages; power companies are prepared and responding.
  • Secure any outdoor items if safe to do so, like wheelie bins, trampolines and outdoor furniture that may low around.
  • Bring pets indoors, if possible, ensure livestock have access to sheltered areas and tie down any loose items on farm.
  • Report any debris on the road to your local councils.
  • If life at risk, call 111.
