Hurunui Council Seat To Remain Vacant
A seat on the Hurunui District Council will remain vacant until October’s local government elections.
Councillor Garry Jackson announced his resignation at last month’s council meeting, leaving a vacancy for the council’s south ward, which includes Amberley.
His resignation took effect on April 15.
Councillors voted not to seek a replacement at a council meeting on Tuesday (April 29).
They also voted not to replace Cr Jackson on the four council committees he was serving on, although Cr Dave Hislop will step up as road safety co-ordinating committee chairperson.
The council did have the option of appointing a new council member without a by-election, council staff said.
The remaining nine councillors will receive a payrise for the remaining six months of the council term.
The councillor remuneration pool will now be divided between nine councillors instead of 10, as determined by the Remuneration Authority.
Cr Jackson resigned in protest at the development of what he considered to be a ‘‘grossly oversized cricket ground’’ in the Amberley Village Green.
