Public Land Purchase Helps Complete Great Harbour Way Vision

The regional council’s purchase of land by Pencarrow Head is a massive step towards realising Great HarbourWay’s vision of a complete walking-cycling path around Wellington’s harbour.

“It’s fantastic that the Greater Wellington Regional Council has been able to buy the land between the Wainuiomata saddle and Pencarrow Head,” GHW Trustees chair Graeme Hall said. “This will help realise our vision of an uninterrupted walking and cycling route around the Wellington Harbour.”

Assisted by a generous donation, the Greater Wellington Regional Council bought the 1366-hectare block for $9 million. It includes wetlands bordering the existing regional park in Eastbourne, connects the Northern Forest to Parangarahu Lakes and ensures public ownership of land on the GHW between the Wainuiomata Saddle and Pencarrow Head.

“Te Ara Tupua, between Ngauranga and Petone, is due for completion next year, filling the major gap in the Great Harbour Way/Te Aranui o Pōneke and this purchase fills one of the last gaps.

“It will also help link the GHW to the Remutaka Cycle Trail and puts the GHW

on track to becoming a significant regional tourist attraction, backing the case for the 70km trail to become one of the Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand,” Hall said.
