Have Your Say: Shaping The Future Of Tourism In Murihiku Southland

Great South wants to hear from the people of Murihiku Southland to help shape the future of tourism in the region. Whether it’s visitors coming to see friends and whānau, business travellers, tour groups, cruise passengers, event-goers, or holidaymakers - tourism takes many forms and impacts our communities in different ways.

Independent research company Angus & Associates is working with Great South to gather feedback from as many locals as possible through a community survey.

Great South Destination Development Manager Amie Young says it’s crucial to understand what matters most to people across the region when it comes to tourism.

“Tourism is much broader than most people realise. It includes everything from corporate visitors and event attendees to cruise passengers and those coming to spend time with friends and whānau. With such a diverse region, it’s natural for perspectives and priorities to vary from place to place.”

“There’s a real opportunity here for tourism to do more than just boost the economy. It can enrich our communities and help protect our environment, but only if it’s developed in line with what locals want.”

The feedback collected through this survey will provide a strong understanding of what our communities want from tourism in both their local area and across the wider Murihiku Southland region. Insights gained will help to shape tourism strategy and initiatives, enhancing the visitor experience while reflecting the aspirations of our people.
