Ngā Wharerau O Aotearoa Says New Partnership Model Helping Ensure Right To A Decent Home Is Realised

“The announcement from the Government confirming its new Strategic Partnership model with five registered Community Housing Providers (CHPs) acknowledges the trust this Government has in our sector to deliver new Income-Related Rent Subsidy funded homes, ensuring the right to a decent home is realised, says Paul Gilberd, Chief Executive of Community Housing Aotearoa.
We commend the Government for funding these homes and acknowledge the five strategic partners who are also our members: Te Āhuru Mōwai Ltd Partnership, The Salvation Army, Accessible Properties NZ Ltd, Community of Refuge Trust (CORT) and Emerge Aotearoa Housing Trust. Certainty is essential in our sector, particularly given our current economic context. The Government’s announcement provides assurance for these five strategic partners. They can now get on with delivering much needed new affordable homes in their communities.
We look forward to future announcements about the Government’s intentions to apply a place-based approach. Housing providers from Invercargill to Kaitaia are experienced and ready to meet the housing needs of their communities.
A place-based approach allows the rest of the sector to participate in delivering local housing solutions to address persistent unmet housing need that is resulting in homelessness. There is more capacity and capability that can be activated by many organisations under the newly announced settings. This is particularly important to activate the potential of Māori to deliver appropriate housing solutions.”
About Community Housing Aotearoa
Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) is a peak body for the community housing sector. To achieve our vision of ‘all New Zealanders well-housed’, we have a strategic focus on supporting a responsive housing system underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Right to a Decent Home.
Our member organisations provide homes for nearly 30,000 people nationally across 26,000 homes, and our partner members include developers, consultants and local councils. Community Housing Organisations are primarily not for dividend entities that develop, own and/or manage social and affordable housing stock, with a variety of tenure offerings.
CHA is a proud Tangata Tiriti organisation and works closely with national Māori housing advocate Te Matapihi, which also represents iwi-based and Māori community housing organisations.
We believe all New Zealanders have the right to a decent home. A home that is affordable, secure, habitable, is near schools, transport and services and is culturally adequate.
