“It’s clear to Kiwis that academic freedom in New Zealand is under threat. In
recent years, both in New Zealand and abroad, we’ve seen the consistent pattern
of universities stifling opinions, and individuals feeling unable to speak freely.
There will be amendments to the Bill introduced by Labour last year, which based
on a similar move which has created significant revenue for some media companies
in Australia.
New Zealand today concluded a groundbreaking trade deal with Costa Rica, Iceland,
and Switzerland, to remove tariffs on hundreds of products that benefit sustainability
and the environment, Trade and Agriculture Minister Todd McClay says.
Working with nature is the most sensible change needed in this Bill. Protecting the
environment from destructive development should be included in the purpose of any
consenting process.
