Dunedin Weather Update #5
Dunedin (10pm, Tuesday, 26 July 2022) – Dunedin Civil Defence Emergency Management continues to monitor localised issues as a result of heavy rain in the city today.
No major flooding has occurred. However, we remain vigilant and are keeping a close eye on streams and rivers, particularly in the North Dunedin area.
Dunedin CDEM, Police and FENZ have evacuated residents from about 35 properties near the Water of Leith as a precaution.
We have opened an evacuation centre at Dunedin North Intermediate, 34 North Road. A small number of people have so far reported to the centre seeking accommodation or support.
We also continue to keep a close watch on the Lindsay Creek in North East Valley. As a precaution, we have evacuated several patients from the Otago Community Hospice to Mercy Hospital.
Neither the Lindsay Creek or the Water of Leith have breached. However, a further 30 to 50 mm of rain is expected to accumulate before 10am tomorrow, on top of what has already fallen in Dunedin, so the situation could change quickly.
The Dunedin Emergency Operations Centre will remain staffed overnight and ready to respond to any issues should they arise.
Sandbags are still available at The Valley Project, next to North East Valley School, on North Road. Sandbags are also available at Victoria Road car park beside the Dunedin Ice Stadium in South Dunedin, and in Mosgiel at the Memorial Park car park.
This will be the last update tonight, unless the situation deteriorates.
