Canterbury Severe Weather Update

Issued by Environment Canterbury on behalf of CDEM Canterbury Group.

The Canterbury Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) Group is standing down the Emergency Coordination Centre this afternoon and will be returning to regular monitoring procedures.

As of midday today, all territorial authorities across the region are winding down their emergency response and transitioning back to business as usual.

Group Controller for Canterbury CDEM Sean Poff acknowledges the affect these weather events have on residents, particularly those who have dealt with the impacts of flooding and severe weather in the past.

“We know this will be taking a toll on people’s wellbeing, and I encourage people to seek help if they feel overwhelmed. If you’re a farmer who is struggling, you can reach out to your local Rural Support Trust or call 1737 if you need to talk to someone.”

Multiple road closures and restrictions remain in place across several districts. For updates on State Highway conditions check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner. For the latest on local road conditions, check with your council.

CDEM continues to closely monitor weather forecasts with more severe weather warnings and watches in place for wind, rain, and snow over the next couple of days. Motorists are strongly encouraged to check weather and road conditions before travelling.

We encourage people to check in with their local council for any enquiries or ongoing issues relating to this severe weather event.
