Matariki Pēwhairangi Festival In The Bay Of Islands Continues
Matariki Pēwhairangi Festival in the Bay of Islands has been a huge success so far with workshops, dawn cruises and events packing out across the region. And there is still more to come!
With the festival running for a few more weeks and through the School Holidays, there are a diverse range of events to experience. From inspirational korero, to exquisite feasts, incredible children’s theatre and whānau fun!
Morph Puppet Festival started Thursday 7 July and runs for 5 days, with the Matariki-themed Shadow Worlds on Sat 9 July at The Turner Centre in Kerikeri.
Mental health advocate, Rob Mokaraka, presents his powerful and thought-provoking one man show, SHOT BRO: Confessions of a Depressed Bullet, at The Duke of Marlborough, Russell on Thursday 14 July.
Back by popular demand is The Manu Masters, where you can show off your manu bombing skills to win a share of a $1000 prize pool! This event is at Russell Wharf on Saturday 16 July, with giveaways and spot prizes for spectators as well as brave jumpers!
Not to be missed is the return of Tohunga Tumau: Puanga Matariki Dinner on Saturday 16 July – a culinary experience hosted at the iconic Duke of Marlborough Hotel. Featuring an all-star line-up of Māori master chefs including the Hangi Master, Rewi Spraggon with Grant Kitchen, Rex Morgan, Joe McLeod and Tama Salive, who will present an exquisite canapes and four-course menu showcasing all that is great about our indigenous cuisine. Music is from the legendary HERBS performing an acoustic set.
Waitangi Treaty Grounds have the Star Waka School Holiday Programme and exhibition running between 11-22 July. Raranga / Whatu by Medina Koni exhibition and workshops are in Kawakawa until 13 July and the Matariki Glow Show hits Northland theatres from 22-24 July. MAHA Restaurant at Wharepuke in Kerikeri and Jimmy Cooks Kiwi Kitchen at The Copthorne Hotel both have delicious Matariki specials on the menu until 31 July
