Winter Light Installation Brings Magic To Parnell

Published: Tue 5 Jul 2022 03:38 PM
A new light installation ‘Kōhatu & The Sphere’ has arrived in Heard Park, Parnell for the month of July, attracting the attention of locals and drawing Aucklanders from far and wide into the area.
Kōhatu & The Sphere is a rotating light installation by Hawkes Bay artist Fish Aberadi. The masterpiece will reside in Heard Park until July 24 as part of Parnell’s annual winter light installation. Conveniently situated on Parnell Road near the main shops and bus stops, Kōhatu & The Sphere is visually stunning at any time of day. It’s the perfect spot for kids to enjoy during the school holidays, local employees to enjoy a scenic lunch break, or for friends and family to pop by on their way to dine out at one of Parnell’s many hospitality venues.
The sculpture has already caught the eye of passers-by, many of whom take the opportunity to admire it up close and grab a picture with it. Each person who uploads a picture of the sculpture to Instagram and tags @parnellauckland can redeem vouchers at local food vendors—the perfect winter gift for our community.
For those who visit Heard Park on Friday evenings, there will be an extra touch of magic to their experience, which kicked off on Friday 1 July with a grand opening event. The sphere in motion speaks directly to the underlying nature and order of the universe, and the dark, moody night touched on the theme of just that. Adding to the ambience was a coffee truck serving free hot drinks, a roaming saxophonist.
Last Friday, a special performance from Viva Voce choir marked the grand opening of the light installation, and the choir performed a selection of a cappella songs that spoke to the timelessness of the stars. Though the choir performance was a one-night-only event, the Friday night magic continues throughout the month. On 8, 15 and 22 July, the roaming saxophonist and free coffee cart return to Heard Park, inviting Aucklanders to gather for a bright and joyful occasion amidst the gloomy winter season.
Kōhatu & The Sphere has been met with positive feedback and genuine comments about the sense of community and ‘life’ that the light installation provided. After two years of lockdowns and disruptions, there is a sense of joy amongst everyone who wanders through Heard Park. It’s a guaranteed way to brighten your winter, and you won’t want to miss out on the experience!
Kōhatu & The Sphere will be at Heard Park from 1-24 July. For more information, visit https://www.parnell.net.nz/kohatu-and-the-sphere/
